What Is An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

An intensive outpatient program offers the most flexibility between residential, PHP, and IOP treatment options. It allows individuals to attend treatment sessions on a schedule that best suits their needs based on their responsibilities, such as work, school, and family. People attend sessions during the day or evening at our treatment facility.

How Do I Know I’m A Good Fit for IOP Programs in Georgia?

Deciding if our IOP programs in Georgia are a good fit for you depends on several different factors and considerations. For starters, if you have a mild or moderate addiction and do not require round-the-clock supervision or the highly intensive and structure of our PHP, then IOP might be a good choice.

Additionally, IOPs are ideal for people who have a stable and supportive home environment outside of treatment. You should also be able to manage your cravings and triggers effectively outside of treatment to prevent relapse. If you are unable to do this, then IOP may not be the best choice for you initially.

Our Georgia IOP Schedule

The schedule for our Georgia IOP will depend on whether you are attending during the daytime or in the evening. Treatment sessions take place Monday through Friday for daytime sessions and Monday through Thursday for evening sessions. Individuals attend treatment sessions multiple times weekly, usually between three and five days, based on their specific needs.

Our hours are flexible enough to allow people to attend addiction or mental health treatment while still being able to attend school, work, and manage personal responsibilities. Our daytime sessions are normally held from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Our evening sessions are from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Our clients even have the flexibility to attend some sessions during the day and others in the evening.

Therapies Available During IOP

Your personalized IOP program in Georgia at Serenity Grove includes various forms of therapies based on your care plan and could include the following:

  • Individual therapy: One-on-one sessions where you can dive deeper into underlying causes of addiction and mental health issues and discuss any issues or concerns you may be struggling with.
  • Group therapy: Group therapy is the core component of our IOPs. We offer different types of group therapy, such as psychoeducation groups, traditional group therapy, group CBT, group DBT, and open sharing and discussion.
  • Family therapy: We recognize including family as part of your personalized treatment plan can be beneficial for everyone. Your family gets to learn how to support your recovery, while together, everyone can work on rebuilding damaged relationships, develop effective communications, and set healthy boundaries.
  • Psychiatry: Our goal is to help our clients get to the root causes of their addiction or mental health disorders. Psychiatry sessions may be held one-on-one or in group settings. Our psychiatrists also provide medication management when you are prescribed medications as part of your treatment plan.
  • MAT: Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) can be beneficial to help manage carvings, reduce relapse, and manage mental health symptoms.
  • Holistic therapies: Our holistic therapies include yoga, meditation, mindfulness, and life skills training to help improve healing and overall physical and mental well-being, essentially for long-term recovery.

Is an Intensive Outpatient Program Effective?

An intensive outpatient program can be an effective form of alcohol use disorder, substance use disorder, and mental health disorder treatment. It can also be appropriate in certain situations for treating dual-diagnosis and co-occurring disorders.

Generally, our IOP programs in Georgia are for individuals who have completed our residential or PHP treatment and need step-down care. Our IOP helps these people successfully transition from a higher level of care back into their daily routines and responsibilities.

Our IOPs are also well suited for people who require more intensive therapeutic modalities than they would receive with traditional outpatient treatment and counseling services. Additionally, these individuals have a solid support system at home and can effectively manage their condition outside of treatment.

An IOP is not effective for those with severe addiction, who need 24/7 monitoring, who require highly structured and intensive full-day treatment, and those who could potentially harm themselves or others.
